Hydrographic Survey Unit
The Hydrographic Survey Unit (HSU) fulfils the Sultanate needs of Hydrographic surveys, carrying out both Coastal and Large-Scale Surveys. The Unit serves both Military and Civil authorities alike.
Furthermore, HSU undertakes all kinds of Beach Surveys, maintains the Database of tides, identifies the factors influencing tides along the Sultanate coasts, and performs maintenance works on tidal systems installed in the main ports of the Sultanate.
Field Hydrographic Surveys are operated in cooperation with RNO vessels equipped with sophisticated hydrographic devices, including a Multi–Beam Sonar System.
Hydrographic Surveys are conducted through following divisions:
-
DataProcessing Unit:
This unit processes and verifies hydrographic survey data collected by Hydrographic Survey Unit.
-
National Hydrographic Office (NHO):
Aside from issuing navigation charts of Omani Waters in compliance with standard specifications of the International Hydrographic Office (IHO), NHO is responsible for monitoring navigational safety of Omani Water habitués, as well as filing hydrographic information.
As of today, NHO has issued 19 navigation charts as part of a comprehensive production plan to cover most of the Omani maritime areas. 3 more charts are in progress and shall be released shortly.
The Office also produces weather publications such as Oman Maritime Handbook, which is issued annually and includes a list of navigational lights utilised in Omani Waters along Omani coast, alongside some navigational lights used in the Waters of neighbouring countries in Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.
Internationally, NHO plays a key role in delineating and defining the Sultanate maritime borders with her neighbours, and offers relevant advice to governmental authorities, from the technical and executive perspectives in particular.
Moreover, NHO has conducted several premium technical studies regarding the delineation of Omani maritime areas such as Internal Waters, Territorial Sea, Bordering Area, and Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ) as per the stipulations of the International Law of the Sea. To store these information, NHO setup a database which also maintains maritime areas operated by RNO to run its exercises and manoeuvres.
