Training Facilities

The Foundation:

Discipline training of RNO personnelThe beginning of training in RNO is dated back to 1970, as RNO personnel were receiving their basic training at SAFTR in Ghala. Nonetheless, RNO identified that such training was barely sufficient to qualify its personnel, since it was primarily preparing them in discipline fields and shooting skills; no further specialised subjects.

Training of naval personnel was directly conducted onboard vessels, suitable with simple vessels available at that time. However, with more modern vessels entering service, it was necessary to restructure existing training and replace it with a more convenient training, and to include technical syllabus. The only available facility to run such training at that time was Sultan Bin Ahmed Naval Base in Muscat, but it was not up to the task due to its limited space. Consequently, a new training centre was established in Sur in 1977, advancing RNO training to a higher level.

Although the new centre in Sur was adequate to fulfill required training upon then, it lacked comprehensive technical setup necessary for advanced technical training, limiting its role to fundamental training for newly joined, officers basic courses and operational branch training.

RNOTC:

RNOTCOn October 1st, 1986, the Training Centre of RNO (RNOTC) was transferred from Sur to a new and more sophisticated facility alongside SBSNB.

RNOTC inauguration was a significant event in RNO at that time, which has consisted of an active working cell, provides training support to train personnel to be capable of carrying weapons, facing dangers to protect the Sultanates security. RNOTC is RNO's biggest training facility, manned with high qualified officers and instructors, and equipped with technically advanced equipment.

RNOTC is one of the integrated educational establishments, and the core of training works, providing basic training for officers and DMs to prepare them sufficiently for overseas courses. Furthermore, RNOTC offers neccessary training for newly joined personnel.

In addition to fundamental training in English, Science, Maths and Computing, RNOTC conducts specialised training required for personnel promotion, such as Command and Administration, Fire Fighting and Damage Control Courses.

Naval Junior Staff School (NJSS):

NJSS plays a significant role in training officers in military and administration to boost their administrative and academic skills, and to qualify them to effectively perform their daily tasks.

Part of officers trainingNJSS is one of RNO's most important modern training establishments, built to develop the naval training and to achieve a high standard of administration, coordination and maritime specialisation research. A number of students from SAF, other security services and that of the GCC countries attend NJSS courses.

Fleet Warfare School (FWS):

FWS prepare Executive Officers to work as specialised officers in warfare operations and navigation, and prepare them to perform their tasks onboard ships

Other Facilities:

Specialised training is also available within other RNO establishments, such as: Divers Training, NSF, and Seamanship Practical Training.
