Participations & Visits: Shabab Oman vessel
Overview
The bilateral visits between RNO officials and their counterparts of friendly and brotherly countries are paid to boost the ties between the Sultanate and other countries.
RNO vessels are largely contributing towards expanding and strengthening bilateral relationships through their occasional foreign participation and visits to the ports of other countries.
History in the Making
The RNO vessel Shabab Oman is the most active among other RNO vessels. The vessel was built in Bucki, Scotland in 1971 and is considered one of the few large wooden vessels still in operation world wide.
Shabab Oman features a barquentine sailing rig soaring to 34 meters high, and carries 14 sails with a combined sail area of 840 m², decorated with the national logo.
Since it joined RNO fleet in 1979, Shabab Oman commenced a thriving saga of notable foreign participations all over the world, establishing bridges of friendship with world nations, and introducing the Sultnanate to the world. During its journey, the vessel visited more than 140 ports and travelled over 250,000 NM.
Some of its featured visits include USA in 1986 & 1992, Australia in 1987, France in 1989 & 1994, Russia in 1996, Hong Kong and Japan in 1997, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Portsmouth and Monaco in 2001.
In 2005, the vesel participated in the International Fleet Review in Portsmouth-UK and in the International Race for Long Sail Ships in Norway. Then it visited Imawdon Port in Amsterdam-Holland, and Bremen Haven port-Germany, before it stopped in Santendeer port-Spain to participate in its Maritme Show.
During its renowned record, Shabab Oman won the International Friendship Trophy for tall sail ships (Cutty Sark Trophy) 4 times: Russia 1996, Japan 1997, Denmark 2001 and Norway 2005.
